Top 20 Essential Bachata Terms

1

Basic Step

The foundational movement of bachata: a three-step pattern followed by a tap on the fourth beat, repeated in alternating directions. Side-side-side-tap. Every bachata style builds on this basic.

2

Body Wave

A sequential undulation that travels through the torso — from chest to hips or the reverse. The signature movement of bachata sensual, used to express lyrical and emotional musical moments.

3

Lead & Follow

The communication system between partners. The leader initiates movements through physical signals (frame, hand pressure, body movement), and the follower interprets and responds to those signals.

4

Sensual

A bachata style focused on body movement, isolations, and musical interpretation rather than footwork. Created by Korke & Judith in Spain. The most popular style worldwide and in Israel.

5

Social Dancing

Informal, improvised partner dancing at parties and events. No choreography — leaders create the dance in real-time based on the music and their connection with the follower.

6

Isolation

Moving one body part independently from the rest — chest circles, hip movements, shoulder rolls. A key technique in sensual bachata for adding detail and musical expression.

7

Frame

The physical structure maintained through the arms, shoulders, and torso that enables partner communication. A good frame is firm enough to communicate clearly but relaxed enough to be comfortable.

8

Cambré

A controlled backward lean or arch of the upper body, supported by the partner. Common in BachaZouk and advanced sensual. Requires trust, core strength, and proper technique.

9

Cross-body Lead

A fundamental turn pattern where the leader guides the follower to cross from one side to the other. One of the first intermediate moves learned, essential for creating interesting combinations.

10

Derecha / Izquierda

Spanish for right and left. Used universally in bachata instruction regardless of country. 'Derecha' = right turn (follower turns right), 'Izquierda' = left turn.

11

Musicality

The ability to interpret and express music through dance movement. Going beyond counting beats to express melody, lyrics, rhythm changes, and emotional dynamics of the song.

12

Open Position

A partner hold where dancers are at arm's length, connected through hands only. Used for turns, footwork patterns, and transitional movements between close-embrace sections.

13

Close Embrace

Partners dance with bodies in contact, typically chest-to-chest. The primary position in bachata sensual, enabling body waves, isolations, and intimate musical interpretation.

14

Practica

A practice session, less formal than a class but more structured than a social. Often used for drilling specific techniques, trying new combinations, or working with a regular partner.

15

Bachata Moderna

An umbrella term for modern, non-Dominican bachata styles. Includes sensual, fusion, and contemporary interpretations. Contrasts with traditional Dominican bachata.

16

Dominican Bachata

The original style from the Dominican Republic. Emphasizes intricate footwork, playful syncopations, and authentic Caribbean energy. The root from which all other styles evolved.

17

BachaZouk

A fusion of bachata and Brazilian zouk. Features flowing head movements, deep cambrés, and continuous body connection. Growing rapidly worldwide and in Israel.

18

Guía

Spanish for 'guide' — the basic forward-and-back or side-to-side walking pattern in bachata. The guía establishes the rhythm and direction of the couple's movement.

19

Dip

A movement where the follower is lowered toward the floor, supported by the leader. Used at musical accents, breaks, or the end of a song. Ranges from subtle to dramatic.

20

Rotation

In a class context: the practice of changing partners after each exercise or song. Standard in most Israeli classes. Helps develop adaptability and introduces you to the community.
